Whether on Diploma courses or any other pathway, young people often misunderstand the skills and qualities needed by employers and admissions tutors. Last week I ran a session with Post 16 students and they guessed that the top things employers needed were a degree, IT skills and people skills. Well that wasn't a bad guess.
This simple card sort exercise contains the top skills employers have mentioned in recent surveys - they simply have to sort them out into order or to make it quicker choose 3 top ones and 3 that would be least important. It works well for students pre-work experience and pre UCAS applications.
Then they can self assessment against the skills and think of ways to improve these skills

If only I had half of these - a student said to me the other day 'How would you like to self assess yourself Miss - its really hard you know!'
