Employability skills

12 March 2010

I've encountered many different formulations of 'employability skills' over the years. The personal. learning and thinking skills (PLTS) are just the latest incarnation of this. In the earliest version of PLTS, employability was in the title but QCA dropped the word because PLTS apply to everyday life as well as learning and work! OK so it's self-evident!

Well, earlier this week, I attended the DCSF IAG conference for senior leaders in the London region and I heard Andy Cole from Vue cinemas speaking about what they look for in new recruits. I really liked the way he summed up what employability means:

  • own what you do
  • find a better way
  • make things happen
  • be friendly and helpful
  • make informed decisions

In other words, you'll always be employable if you can add value to the business and this is how to do it! What's the best definition of employability that you've come across?

Thanks for that!

The employability questionnaire is really useful! I could see post-16 students trying it out. We're allowed to make a link to it on the University of Kent Careers Advisory Service website so I'll mention it to a few schools.

I like this list, Anthony -

I like this list, Anthony - short and snappy! I guess different employment sectors/organisations would give greater or lesser weight to individual employability skills than others, but I have the feeling that, even if they're contentious to describe, we know them when we see them! Not very helpful - sorry. The University of Kent's careers advisory service website has an 'analyse your employability' tool - fun to try! - see http://www.kent.ac.uk/careers/sk/skillsinventory.html .
